Rivka a marketing leader in the Grand Rapids, MI area (and beyond) sat down with  A Solution B,LLC to share her story.  Struggling with mental health, trauma and other major life events may have rocked the boat, but it definitely did not hold Rivka back.

Read below to learn why Rivka is an Overcomer .

I am inspired by making positive changes in the world around me.

Q) Rivka, you have started a business, helped to co-lead and grow a networking group women for several years, and have spoken at conferences around the country. Can you share a bit about your business, and what inspires you?

A) My business is social media marketing, content writing, and business development. It has evolved over time for sure! My goals and even the business itself has changed many times. The thing that hasn't changed is that I wanted to create a life without limits. When I worked for someone else, I was always able to go so far and then no further. My successes, my ability to experiment and learn, my income, and my work itself was always limited by the vision and goals of my boss. By having my own business, I am never bored. I am able to learn and grow daily. I have been able to accomplish things that I could not have imagined when I got started!

I am inspired by making positive changes in the world around me. No matter what type of work I am doing, with a client, writing, speaking, or anything else, I always want what I do to have an impact for good. This is a driving force between all the decisions I make in my business and life.

Q) You've briefly shared with me things you've experienced, such as homelessness, childhood trauma, and poverty, as well as a diagnosis of anxiety and depression. How did these impact your decision to pursue your business?

A) One thing that was important to me, especially as I became a mom, was to provide my children with a better life than I had. Equally important is to be able to give back to others and make the world a better place for everyone. Having my own business allows me to create space for me to take care of myself - and to take care of others.

Because I create my business around my strengths, I can be successful even though I still live with anxiety and depression. Maya Angelou said - "Success is liking who you are, what you do, and how you do it." This quote resonates deeply with me. Being able to create my own structure allows me to minimize the effects of anxiety on my life while being able to do for others too.

My children are growing up being able to reach their potential because they have a mom with a flexible schedule who can be there for them, and also provide for them financially. Without my business, none of this would be possible.

 Q) What were you most hesitant about, and how did you deal with it to become the proactive and successful person you are today?

A) I don't remember being hesitant per se. After considering all my options, I realized that business ownership was the only path. At least the only path to reach my goals: financial success and freedom to be a mom and help other people. Once I saw the road forward, it was a decision to make it work one way or another. There were no other options that led to where I wanted to go. The biggest challenges have been learning when to say no, and how to make sure that I don't forget to take care of myself too.

 Q) What have you learned about yourself in this process and what is something you desire to work on further?

A) I have learned that I am so much stronger than I give myself credit for. I have learned that I am an amazing problem solver. The biggest thing I need to work on is giving myself as much grace as I give others. I have very little tolerance with myself for mistakes and can be too hard on myself sometimes.

Because I create my business around my strengths…

Q) Rivka, you've provided valuable insight with the founder of A Solution B, LLC that you've learned running your business. Based on your own experiences and diagnosis what do you find most appealing about A Solution B that you wish others knew?

A) It is okay to ask for help. Often, we are taught this feeling that if we don't do it on our own, then it doesn't count. But the reality is, that the synergy between things and people that bring about the best in the world. There really is no "on my own" - everyone successful has had help along the way. Being willing to ask for help when I need it, and accept it when it is offered, has been one of the most critical areas of growth for both me and my business. If you are trying to work through trauma, don't feel that you have to do it alone. As isolating as you may feel, finding a fantastic counselor like A Solution B can help you realize that you have someone who is there for you. Recovery and thriving are possible. Don't wait! Do everything in your power to get support, because it will make you more able to help others in the future, and because you deserve to be happy and have joy!

 Q) What would you share with someone who is thinking about making a similar step as you have?

A) You can do it! There will be bumps along the way - that is normal. You might try things that don't work. That is normal too. Find a community of people who are already doing what you want to do that is supportive and helpful. Take the time to provide yourself with a financial buffer if you can, so that you can make decisions based on what is best for your business long-term, rather than what you feel like you have to do because of money. And don't give up!

Q) What is next for you in your life and business?

A) Right now, I am in the beginning stages of preparing for a run for County Commissioner in Ottawa County in 2022. It is so essential for women to have a voice at the table and show leadership at every level of government. I want to set an example for my children that everyone can take action and make a difference in their community. Running for public office will be a completely new challenge for me but is another example of what the flexibility from business gives me the option to do. I am also working on some new literacy initiatives in West Michigan, as reading and lifelong learning are so vital to a thriving community.

Rivka is a survivor. She has found her solution to "pass the torch" to those whom she comes into contact . It seems she hasn't allowed her adversity to define who she is or to stop her from reaching her goals. Not only is she aware of her strengths...she's not afraid to admit there are areas in her life she can enhance. This doesn't make her weak, it makes her human.  It makes her... an Overcomer.

It's a new year, making a commitment to be more compassionate towards yourself is a goal many can work towards...to be an Overcomer... take the element of self-compassion and use it like Rivka.
