Trailblazer Interview: Erin Eising

Trailblazer Interview: Erin Eising

.One of my favorite things to do is connect with passionate individuals using their talents to help the community. I like to call them trailblazers, visionaries who help us understand more about our health and emotions.

Today’s trailblazer is Erin Eising. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Erin is a licensed clinical social worker and has ten years of experience in childhood, adolescent, and play therapy, as well as EMDR therapy for children and adults. Her philosophy emphasizes addressing the mind, spirit and environment to foster healing and mental well-being.

About Erin Eising

Erin's passion for her work results from her personal experiences. She noticed the impact diet and lifestyle choices had on her child's behavior, which led her to explore alternative approaches to mental health. Her journey of self-discovery and exploration of the mind-body-spirit connection inspired her to integrate these considerations into her practice, and lead to her commitment to providing personalized and supportive care to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The Power of Play

Erin believes that play therapy is a powerful tool for children to express themselves and communicate with their therapist. In this form of therapy, play becomes a language, and toys become the child's words. By engaging in play therapy, children invite therapists into their world, enabling them to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Erin highlights that play therapy goes beyond mere play; it offers children a safe space to express their emotions, giving them a voice and promoting healing and self-expression.

Building a trusted relationship with children before delving into their struggles is of utmost importance in this type of therapy. Just as adults wouldn't immediately divulge their life stories to a stranger, children need time to feel comfortable and safe before opening up. The first few sessions of play therapy focus on building rapport and creating a safe space, allowing children to gradually invite therapists into their world. By establishing a sense of trust and autonomy, children gain confidence and find therapeutic value in the process.

A Holistic Approach to Mental Health

Erin's practice considers the whole person, including their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. She believes that mental health is interconnected with various aspects of life, such as diet, spirituality, and support systems. Erin's approach identifies the root causes of mental health issues and tailors therapy to each person’s unique needs. She encourages clients to explore the mind-body-spirit connection and embrace a comprehensive understanding of their personal well-being, as she understands that a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective.

Erin's dedication to providing accessible mental health services is evident in her commitment to accepting various insurances, including Medicaid and Medicare. She believes that income should not determine individuals' quality of mental health care. Additionally, Erin offers sliding-scale options to ensure that financial considerations do not become barriers to seeking therapy. Her goal is to empower individuals to prioritize their mental health without the added stress of financial constraints.
